Bat enthusiast Bill Giezentanner will lead this walk to search for bats on the Krusch Preserve using sound technology. Recording bats’ echolocation “calls” is an efficient and non-intrusive way to identify what species occur in an area. According to VT Fish and Wildlife, Vermont is home to nine bat species, five of which are now listed as endangered or threatened. White nose syndrome has decimated bats nationwide, an unprecedented disease of cave hibernating bats caused by a fungus that thrives in the cold. Thus far the only species confirmed on this Preserve is the Big Brown Bat. Join us on this walk to learn more about Vermont’s bats, how to help protect them, and be part of discovering what species occur in this area. Bill is a resource management specialist and expert in conservation education, long affiliated with MassAudubon, and was instrumental in the early planning for establishing the Krusch Preserve.
