GEOLOGY WALK, November 11th, 2023

On a cloudy November Saturday morning 25 people met at the Krusch Preserve parking lot to walk with Stephen Wright a surfacial geologist from the University of Vermont. Stephen lead us to the meadow where we did a soil sampling finding sand in different phases of fineness. As we stood in the meadow he explained that 10,000 years ago plus, we were probably standing in or on the shores of Lake Vermont and the sand had been deposited at that time.

He led us across the Seasonal Brook into the woods and discussed glacial till which formed when the glaciers-  2 miles high-  were flowing and receding and scraping and moving rocks across the earth. We proceeded to the gorge and discussed the flow of the Dragron Brook and how it may have switched paths as we could see another small valley carved into the landforms around us. We finished up at the Sand Blow, discussing the sand blow and how the shifting sands prevents plant growth from happening without people helping to establish it.

Stephen was animated, professional and very informative. We hope we can have him come back again in years to come.
